  • CDC Update on the Novel Coronavirus
    Updated On: Jan 31, 2020

January 31, 2020 - Check out this CDC briefing from earlier today regarding the Novel Coronavirus outbreak (2019-nCoV). We are waiting to hear Social Security Administration's contingency plans if this already serious global pandemic becomes more widespread here in the United States. We are a large federal agency which offers direct face to face service with the public every day. Our field office waiting rooms are normally very busy and at full capacity.

AFGE Local 1164 represents 74 offices across the six New England states involving some 1,200 to 1,300 employees. Our employees serve the public, some of the which come from the most vulnerable segments of the population. In order to effectively serve the public, our employees need to be safeguarded from the spreading of any illness using some very basic and no nonsense techniques and supplies to be available to employees and the public.

In case the pandemic were to escalate here in the U.S. similar to what we've seen in China, what does SSA plan to do for the continuity of government operations? We can think of one such remedy that was eliminated in our field, workload support unit offices, and reduced in the hearing offices across the country.
